What causes spleen pain?

The spleen is the largest organ of the immune system and is located in the left hypochondrium.

This organ is involved in the functioning of the blood circulation and lymphatic system - with its help, the body fights infection and filters unsuitable, useless material.

Spleen pain should be felt in the upper left side of the abdomen, behind the lower left rib. In the case of spleen pain, you may complain of radiating pain in the left shoulder, arm area.

The cause of the pain may be injury or rupture of the spleen.

In some clinical cases, the cause of pain is the following diseases:

  • Liver disease;
  • Glandular fever;
  • Sickle cell anemia;
  • Malaria;
  • Lymphoma.

Blood analysis, CT (computed tomography) and magnetic resonance examination are necessary to determine the cause.

Usually, the pain in the spleen is permanent, but the intensity and quality of the discomfort may change.
