Breast tenderness

Breast tenderness

When should you see a doctor?

Changes in the breast are a normal part of a woman's anatomy. In most cases, breast tenderness is not dangerous and is rarely associated with a serious illness.

Causes may include:

• Fibrocystic changes;
• Menstruation;
• Pregnancy;
• Breastfeeding;
• Breast infection;
• Side effects of certain medications.

A feeling of heaviness alone (when this symptom is the only one that bothers you and nothing else) is not an indication of a serious problem, but if other symptoms are also present, consult a doctor immediately.

A feeling of heaviness alone (when this symptom is the only one that bothers you and nothing else) is not a sign of a serious problem, but if other symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately.

Be sure to consult a doctor if you notice these symptoms:

• A hard, painless lump;
• Redness or change in skin color in the breast;
• Pain or burning sensation when breastfeeding;
• Fever;
• Inverted nipple;
• Bleeding from the nipple;
• Severe fatigue.

Note that you should consult a doctor if you have a family history of breast cancer or have had breast surgery in the past.
