Gum recession - when the roots of the teeth are visible due to the loss of gum tissue

What is gum recession?

Gum recession is a disease of the gums. Due to the loss of gum tissue, the tissue recedes, thus exposing the roots - the risk of bacteria accumulating in the roots and caries increases significantly.

Timely treatment is necessary, otherwise an acute infection may develop and the tooth may be lost. Treatment includes antibiotic therapy, antimicrobial ointments and surgery. Gum recession cannot be completely cured, however, a course of treatment prevents the condition from worsening.

Gum recession is especially common in people over 65.

The following factors contribute to the development of the disease:

  • Periodontal disease;
  • Wearing braces or having other orthodontic treatment;
  • Smoking;
  • Lip or tongue piercings;
  • Aggressive, rough brushing of the teeth;
  • Dental plaque;
  • Trauma to the gum tissue.

Symptoms of gum recession include:

  • Pain or discomfort along the gum line;
  • Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods;
  • Sensitivity when brushing your teeth;
  • Sensitivity when flossing.

Sometimes, but not always, poor oral hygiene is the cause of gum recession. For example, some people have a genetic predisposition to receding gum tissue.
