Determination of calcitonin concentration in the blood

Determination of calcitonin concentration in the blood

What is calcitonin?

What is calcitonin?

Calcitonin is a hormone produced by parathyroid C cells of the thyroid gland. Calcitonin is involved in the regulation of adequate levels of calcium and phosphate in the blood, producing parafollicular cells.

Why is research prescribed?

The study is intended to diagnose and monitor C cell hyperplasia and medullary thyroid cancer.

The test is also recommended for people at risk - it is a kind of effective screening for multiple endocrine neoplasms type two.

The calcitonin test is periodically prescribed for multiple family members of endocrine neoplasia type two patients.

Determining the level of calcitonin in the treatment of medullary thyroid cancer is desirable to monitor the course of treatment - the treating physician determines on the basis of research whether the method is effective or whether the patient is facing relapse.

A subsidiary of the Health and Tourism International Center and the official partner of the Turkish network of clinics "Acibadem" in Georgia, i-Lab Laboratory offers the determination of the concentration of calcitonin in the blood.

Please note that pre-registration is required.

The following symptoms are noticeable:

  • Swelling in the throat;
  • Sore throat;
  • Change of voice;
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing;
  • Persistent, chronic cough that has nothing to do with the flu or cold.

What does the analysis response mean?

Calcitonin levels are usually low. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that a low level does not necessarily mean that a doctor should rule out the presence of medullary thyroid cancer.

Significantly elevated levels of C cellular hyperplasia or medullary thyroid cancer are indicative.

However, in both diagnoses (C cell hyperplasia or medullary thyroid cancer), if we are dealing with an early stage, there is usually an excess of calcitonin in the patient. This is why determining calcitonin levels alone is not enough and other additional diagnostic methods become necessary: thyroid biopsy, scan and ultrasound.

It should be noted that the level of calcitonin may also increase due to lung, breast, pancreatic cancer.

This hormone may be present in excessive amounts in the following conditions:

  • Carcinoid tumor of the intestine, stomach, bronchi;
  • Chronic renal failure;
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome;
  • Pernicious anemia.
