In the era of Coronavirus pandemic, you probably often hear the words "antigen" and "antibody"; however, many people may not have accurate information about these conditions. The article will also talk about methods for diagnosing coronavirus.
From today you have the opportunity to conduct a rapid antibody-based test at the I-Lab Laboratory in Tbilisi, which is the official partner of the Acibadem Laboratory (the largest Turkish clinic network) in Georgia.
Contact i-Lab to find out if you already had Coronavirus disease.Make the correct diagnosis - get reliable and accurate test result (sensitivity 95%, specificity 98%).
Methods of diagnosing coronavirus
Three types of laboratory methods are provided for the diagnosis of coronavirus:
- Molecular diagnostics, same as PCR;
- Rapid antigen-based test;
- Rapid antibody-based test.
PCR test
The molecular testing method based on PCR technology is called the gold standard for diagnosing respiratory viruses because it allows us to detect the virus at a very early stage.
When the result is positive, it can most likely be said that a person has this infection.
Quick tests
There are 2 types of quick test.
One is a rapid test based on antibodies. During this laboratory test we look for 2 types of antibodies and these are - immunoglobulin G and M.
If immunoglobulin M has been identified, it means that the virus is in a severe, acute phase. In coronavirus, immunoglobulin M usually appears on the 5th or 7th day of infection.
And if the test result showed immunoglobulin G it means that the person has contracted the infection.
There is another type of rapid test known as the antigen-based rapid test. Like PCR, an antigen test detects the virus in an active phase.
What is an antibody?
An antibody is also known as a protein of immunoglobulin nature and is produced in response to the introduction of an antigen into the body.
Antibody synthesis is produced by B-lymphocytes.
An antibody is a protective protein produced by the immune system.
When a foreign substance, or antigen, enters the body, the immune system produces antibodies against it to protect the body.
What is an antigen?
An antigen is a substance foreign to the body, usually a protein or protein complex, in response to which specific antibodies are produced in the body.
An antigen is any substance, a substance that stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against it.
Any foreign pathogenesis (bacteria and virus), chemicals, toxins, pollen or other, is an antigen for the body.
