What is the treatment model for congenital heart defects?

Mayo Clinic has been treating patients with congenital heart disease (both children and adults) for over 60 years.

An interesting article was published on the clinic’s website on various aspects of the multidisciplinary treatment model of the Congenital Disease Center.

Patients with congenital heart defects were included in the study.

Mayo Clinic electrophysiologist Malin Madhavan, studied the role of heart rhythm in monitoring these patients.

The function of the heart is to provide blood flow to the body. This is the central organ of the circulatory system, whose rhythmic contraction of the muscle wall makes the blood circulate.

When the electrical impulses controlling the heart rate are no longer functioning properly, heart rhythm problems develop. Patients complain of the following symptoms:

  • Accelerated heartbeat;
  • Difficulty breathing during physical exertion;
  • Severe fatigue during movement;
  • A feeling of heart failure;
  • Dizziness;
  • Chest pain and more.

Monitoring of heart rhythm is recommended when these symptoms are detected.

Timely treatment of heart rhythm pathology is vital, as it can lead to heart failure or stroke. Unfortunately, it is possible that if left untreated, the clinical case will end fatally. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment are important!

When the patient has some symptoms, and an electrocardiogram is prescribed for arrhythmia. Additional monitoring may require a 24-hour heart rate monitor. For patients whose symptoms rarely appear, a small implant is designed.

Treatment may include medications (antiarrhythmic drugs) that should be monitored by an electrophysiologist. Another treatment is catheter ablation (minimally invasive procedure). Treatment of pathology may require defibrillator implantation.

“Managing a heart rhythm problem requires teamwork. That's why I have daily contact with cardiologists and cardio surgeons, ”says the study's author.
