Why does blood appear in the urine?

The blood content of urine in medical language is called hematuria.

In many clinical cases, the underlying cause is not dangerous, but sometimes hematuria may be a sign of a serious disorder.

When you see blood in the urine macroscopically, that is, with the naked eye, you are dealing with visible hematuria, and in clinical cases, when blood can be seen in the urine only through a microscope, it is called microscopic hematuria. It is determined by a doctor by laboratory testing. In both cases there is a need for timely diagnosis and appropriate management. Treatment depends on the cause.

Gross hematuria produces pink, red or cola-colored urine due to the presence of red blood cells. It takes little blood to produce red urine, and the bleeding usually isn't painful. Passing blood clots in your urine, however, can be painful.

Make an appointment to see your doctor anytime you notice blood in your urine. Some medications can cause your urine to turn red. But in any case, a correct diagnosis is needed.

Causes

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Kidney infections (pyelonephritis)
  • A bladder or kidney stone
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Kidney disease
  • Cancer
  • Inherited disorders
  • Kidney injury
  • Medications
  • Strenuous exercise

Age should also be considered - many men older than 50 have occasional hematuria due to an enlarged prostate gland. Family history also should be considered.
