Allergy to spices

Allergy to spices

2% of the population has an allergic reaction to spices.

The most common causes are:

  • Celery;
  • Garlic;
  • Cinnamon;
  • Sesame seeds;
  • Turmeric;
  • Onion;
  • Mustard.

Statistically, the most common cause of an allergic reaction is mustard. Allergists confirm that they have had patients with allergic reactions to black pepper and vanilla.

The cause of true allergy is a specific protein contained in the spice. However, allergies may develop as a result of a cross-reaction, that is, if you are allergic to nuts or tree dust, it is quite possible that you are also allergic to a particular spice.

You are allergic to the spice if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhea;
  • Nausea;
  • Stomach problems;
  • Bloating;
  • Urticaria;
  • Swelling of the lip;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Anaphylaxis.

Often the body has a delayed reaction to the spice, therefore, it becomes difficult to identify the exact cause. In addition, almost no one eats the spice alone and it is used as an ingredient in various dishes or cookies.
