What does kidney pain mean?
Kidney pain is a discomfort, an unpleasant feeling in the kidney area.
The patient suffers from various symptoms, but the most common are the following:
- Constant, dull pain in the back;
- Pain in the sides, under the ribs or in the abdomen;
- A kind of wave-like, acute or cutting pain;
- Pain that spreads to the groin area.
Note that kidney pain is often accompanied by nausea or vomiting (especially if the pain is due to kidney stones).
Possible causes are:
- Kidney stones;
- Urine retention;
- Vesicoureteral reflux;
- Obstruction of the pelvic-ureteral segment;
- Narrowing of the urethral canal;
- Kidney infection;
- Polycystic kidney disease;
- Trauma or injury in the kidney area and others.
See your doctor if you have persistent kidney pain or back pain accompanied by any of these symptoms:
- Fever;
- Nausea or vomiting, which makes it difficult for you to take food or liquid;
- Urine of unusual color;
- Pain during urination;
- Blood in the urine;
- Desire to urinate frequently;
- General weakness, feeling unwell.
