Kidney pain

What does kidney pain mean?

Kidney pain is a discomfort, an unpleasant feeling in the kidney area.

The patient suffers from various symptoms, but the most common are the following:

  • Constant, dull pain in the back;
  • Pain in the sides, under the ribs or in the abdomen;
  • A kind of wave-like, acute or cutting pain;
  • Pain that spreads to the groin area.

Note that kidney pain is often accompanied by nausea or vomiting (especially if the pain is due to kidney stones).

Possible causes are:

  • Kidney stones;
  • Urine retention;
  • Vesicoureteral reflux;
  • Obstruction of the pelvic-ureteral segment;
  • Narrowing of the urethral canal;
  • Kidney infection;
  • Polycystic kidney disease;
  • Trauma or injury in the kidney area and others.

See your doctor if you have persistent kidney pain or back pain accompanied by any of these symptoms:

  • Fever;
  • Nausea or vomiting, which makes it difficult for you to take food or liquid;
  • Urine of unusual color;
  • Pain during urination;
  • Blood in the urine;
  • Desire to urinate frequently;
  • General weakness, feeling unwell.
