Food poisoning, a type of foodborne illness, is a sickness people get from something they ate or drank. The causes are germs or other harmful things in the food or beverage.

Symptoms of food poisoning often include upset stomach, diarrhea and vomiting. Symptoms usually start within hours or several days of eating the food. Most people have mild illness and get better without treatment.

Sometimes food poisoning causes severe illness or complications.

Anyone can get food poisoning. Some people are more likely to get sick or have more-serious disease or complications.

These people include:

  •  Infants and children.
  •  Pregnant people.
  •  Older adults.
  •  People with weakened immune systems due to another disease or treatments.

Taking into account certain recommendations, the risk of food poisoning is reduced to a minimum.

Prevention methods are:

  •  Before you eat dinner or prepare food, you should wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds;
  •  Wash fruits and vegetables well in running water;
  •  the spoon, knife, fork and all the things that the product touches must be clean;
  •  raw or undercooked meat is not allowed;
  •  Store food in the refrigerator on time, carefully check the expiration date of the product;
  •  If you suspect that the rules were violated during food preparation, throw away the product;
  •  Any food that grows mold should be thrown away;
  •  Take care of the cleanliness of the refrigerator.
