Tachypnea - Shallow, rapid breathing

What is tachypnea?

Tachypnea is rapid, shallow breathing, which makes a person feel as if they are gasping for air.

No one is immune to this condition, but it is more common in newborns and people with respiratory diseases.

Tachypnea can be prevented by treating the underlying condition.

Tachypnea causes the following symptoms:

• Blue or gray discoloration of the skin, nails, and lips;
• Chest pain;
• Difficulty breathing;
• Feeling like you are not getting enough air;
• Shortness of breath.

Tachypnea can be a symptom of an emergency, so if you or your child are having trouble breathing, call 911 immediately.

The cause may be:

• Allergic reaction;
• Anxiety or panic attack;
• Asthma;
• Blood clot;
• Carbon monoxide poisoning;
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
• Pneumonia;
• Pleural infection;
• Pulmonary embolism;
• Sepsis, etc.
