Thyroid cancer and genetic analysis

Thyroid cancer and genetic analysis

Why should you do genetic research?

Every person should be aware of their own health status, determine if they are a carrier of any genetic disease, and what methods can be used to prevent the pathology.

As you know, one of the great challenges of modern medicine is cancer, and it is often vital to diagnose this disease at an early stage, ie at a stage when the disease has not spread / metastasized in the body.

Different types of cancer have different risk factors. Some factors can be managed and changed (e.g., weight, tobacco, alcohol, stress, etc.), but some cannot be influenced (age, family history, etc.).

Genetics and cancer risk

In order for the reader to easily grasp the importance of research, it is essential to understand what the cancer gene means.

For example, there may be a specific gene in a person’s body that is quite likely to turn into cancer, although a number of preventive measures and monitoring can prevent thyroid cancer.

Of course, genes do not necessarily mean that you have cancer, you just know the risk and avoid provoking it as much as possible.

Keep in mind that you are at a higher risk of developing thyroid cancer if your first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, and / or children) get this type of cancer. The risk is high even if no hereditary syndrome is observed.

Thyroid cancer, sex, age

Oncologists do not know the exact cause, but if we look at the percentage we find that women get sick three times more often than men.

Age is also noteworthy; Thyroid cancer can occur at any age, although the risk is much higher in women between the ages of 40 and 50.

Medullary cancer and hereditary genes

Oncologists explain that some inherited conditions are associated with different types of thyroid cancer. However, most patients with thyroid cancer do not have an inherited condition or a family history of cancer.

It should be noted that the share of medullary cancer among thyroid cancers is 5-10%. Often the cause of medullary cancer is multiple endocrine neoplasms associated with genetic factors.

Unfortunately, this type of cancer is characterized by rapid progression and aggressive course.

It is known that 2 out of every 10 cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma originate from an inherited abnormal gene.

Be sure to consult a doctor if you suspect an inherited pathology according to the health status and diagnosis of family members, relatives - the doctor will assess all risk factors, examine your personal and family medical history and will most likely order a genetic test to avoid any possible complications.
