What is sexual dysfunction?

Sexual dysfunction is any type of problem that makes it difficult for an individual or couple to enjoy intimate relationships.

Statistically, 43% of women and 31% of men have some degree of sexual dysfunction.

Doctors divide sexual dysfunction into 4 main categories:

  • Decreased interest and desire for sexual intercourse;
  • You are unable to feel or are not excited during sexual activity;
  • You are unable to achieve orgasm;
  • Pain during intimate relationships.

Sexual dysfunction can occur at any age, but is more common in people over 40.

Physical causes of sexual dysfunction include:

  • Kidney or liver failure;
  • Diabetes;
  • Heart and vascular diseases;
  • Multiple sclerosis or nerve damage;
  • Hormonal imbalance;
  • Cancer;
  • Menopause;
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • Alcohol consumption;
  • Side effects of some medications.

Psychological causes of sexual dysfunction include:

  • Stress or anxiety;
  • Personal problems;
  • Dislike of your appearance;
  • Sexual abuse or trauma during intimate relationships;
  • Feelings of guilt or depression;
  • Fear that you will not be able to perform sexually in a way that your partner will like.
