Spider bites - when should you seek medical attention?

Usually, spider bites are harmless, but if you experience certain symptoms, you should seek emergency medical attention.

There are only a few species of spiders in nature whose venom can be fatal to humans.

A spider bite can cause redness, swelling, pain, and discomfort.

A patient should seek emergency medical attention if they experience any of the following symptoms:

  • You are unsure whether the spider was venomous or not;
  • A sore has formed at the site of the bite and is growing in size;
  • You experience severe pain after the bite;
  • Abdominal cramps, convulsions;
  • Difficulty breathing.

It is quite possible to mistake a spider bite for other skin ulcers, burns, or even infections. However, a doctor can easily diagnose a spider bite based on your symptoms and a visual examination. Most spider bites usually heal on their own within a week.

First aid includes:

  • Wash the wound with soap and water. Apply an antibiotic ointment three times a day to prevent infection;
  • Apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the bite for 15 minutes every hour;
  • Elevate the bite area if possible;
  • Observe the wound carefully - any visual changes are noteworthy.

In case of severe pain and muscle spasms, your doctor will prescribe appropriate medication. You may also need a tetanus shot. An anti-venom serum is given for bites from black widow spiders (a type of spider).
