When is this test ordered?
A urine albumin-creatinine ratio test is ordered to determine if the kidneys are functioning properly.
If the kidneys are healthy:
- Albumin remains in the blood and does not enter the urine;
- Creatinine is filtered from the blood and excreted in the urine.
This test is required if you have a history of diabetes or chronic kidney disease and need to assess your kidney function.
Other clinical indications include:
- High blood pressure;
- Heart disease;
- Cirrhosis of the liver.
An albumin-creatinine ratio test is also ordered if a person is over 50, smokes, or has a high body mass index (proven to be overweight).
