Pus in the Gums - What are the Symptoms of a Gum Abscess?

What is a Gum Abscess?

A gum abscess is a collection of pus, a pocket of infection, in the gum or between the tooth and gum. Bacteria can enter this area due to a dental abscess or other type of poor oral hygiene.

A gum abscess is different from a dental abscess, but they share common symptoms and treatment methods.

The mouth normally contains both good and bad bacteria. The buildup of bad bacteria can lead to plaque and tartar, which can contribute to tooth decay and other dental problems. If bad bacteria find an open wound or tissue and get inside, they can multiply and cause an infection.

Gum abscesses are often seen in people who, for some reason, are unable to maintain good oral hygiene. Other risk factors include:

• Hormonal changes;
• Diabetes;
• Side effects of certain medications;
• Genetic factors;
• Weak immunity.

The main symptoms of a gum abscess are pain and swelling, and you may also feel discomfort when chewing. You may notice a lump in the area of the abscess that is painful and feels like pressure.

Other symptoms include:

• Bad breath;
• Pus;
• Bleeding gums;
• Increased sensitivity in the tooth or gum area;
• Fever;
• Gum recession (when the gum tissue recedes due to loss of gum tissue).
