What is ptosis?
Ptosis is a diagnosis that means that the eyelid is drooping, drooping over the eye. As a result, the risk of vision problems and other complications increases.
Ptosis can be congenital and acquired.
The first and main symptom of ptosis is that the eyelid is drooping and covers either the entire pupil or only the upper part of the eye. Other signs include:
- A strong desire to rub the eyes;
- Severe tearing;
- Reduced vision;
- Pain and fatigue in the eye area.
In the case of acquired ptosis, the cause is the weakening of the muscle that normally lifts the eyelid up due to trauma or disease.
Contributing diseases and circumstances include:
- Stroke;
- Tumor;
- External ophthalmoplegia;
- Myasthenia gravis;
- Horner's syndrome;
- Gibbs disease.
In some clinical cases, it is a part of the natural aging process, because with age, the eyelid muscle and skin weaken and lose their density.
If ptosis is congenital, treatment is necessary, because in severe cases it negatively affects the development of the child's vision.
