Bruise - how to treat at home and when should you go to the clinic?

Bruise, contusion, bruise is called contusion in medical language.

This type of injury is common in sports injuries. The cause is a direct blow or an impulsive blow, for example, a fall.

A bruise visually looks like a dark or bluish spot, but this is only if a small blood vessel has ruptured and blood has seeped under the skin. Bone, muscle and other organs may also be injured, but this type of injury is in deep tissue and cannot be visually detected without a computer scan. Deep tissue contusions cause swelling and pain - if we are dealing with a serious injury, a minor bruise will heal in a few weeks.

For home treatment, it is recommended:

  • Place ice wrapped in a cloth on the injured area for 10-20 minutes;
  • You can take a mild painkiller (a medication that you can buy at a pharmacy and does not require a doctor's prescription);
  • If you have a bruise on your extremities, try to rest them on a pillow.

Contact your doctor or go to the clinic yourself if:

  • The pain is getting worse;
  • You have new swelling or an old bruise has become worse;
  • Numbness, weakness, or tingling in the area of the contusion;
  • The skin in the affected area is cold or pale;
  • The condition is not improving.
