What is toxic masculinity?

The exact definition of this term has evolved over time. In modern society, people use this term to emphasize exaggerated masculine qualities that are widely accepted or approved in some cultures.

Have you often heard the following words, for example, don't cry like a girl, act like a man, a man is a man, etc.? Many men try to adapt to such ideas established in society, and in the meantime, toxic qualities develop in them.

Toxic masculinity is characterized by:

  • Aggression;
  • Sexual aggression or control;
  • Hiding emotions;
  • Suppression of emotions;
  • Inadequate rivalry;
  • Dominance over others;
  • Isolation;
  • Low empathy;
  • Sexism;
  • Chauvinism.

Many people view masculinity and gender roles from different perspectives, and their views may be influenced by age, class, culture, religion, and race.
