Discectomy - What type of surgery is recommended if a herniated disc is diagnosed

What is a discectomy?

A discectomy is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon removes a portion of a damaged disc from the spine.

A discectomy is an ideal option for patients who have pain from a compressed nerve that radiates to the upper or lower extremities. The procedure is less effective if the pain is felt only in the back or neck. Weight loss, arthritis treatments, and physical therapy are more effective for back or neck pain.

A discectomy is recommended in the following situations:

  • The patient has difficulty standing or walking due to nerve weakness;
  • The symptoms have not improved within 6-12 weeks after conservative treatment (steroid injections or physical therapy);
  • The pain spreads to the buttocks, legs, arms, and chest, and it takes extra effort to manage the discomfort.
