What is cervical stenosis?
Cervical stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal is narrowed for the nerve roots and spinal cord - resulting in damage to the spinal cord.
Cervical stenosis is caused by a combination of factors that cause a critical level of spinal cord compression, such as degenerative arthritis, enlarged ligaments, rheumatoid arthritis, and abnormal bone formation.
Symptoms of cervical stenosis include:
- Neck pain;
- Pain in the upper extremities;
- Electric shock-like sensations in the back;
- Numbness in the arms;
- Loss of coordination;
- Difficulty controlling bowel and bladder function;
- Weakness and numbness in the legs;
- Limiting physical activity.
It is important to note that cervical stenosis does not always worsen or cause progressive symptoms.
Many patients have mild stenosis and rarely require treatment.
Symptoms of cervical stenosis are amenable to medication and physical therapy.
