Good Girl Syndrome

Good Girl Syndrome

What is Good Girl Syndrome?

Being a woman in the modern world is not easy - you have to be cheerful but not infantile, sexy but not immoral, ambitious and at the same time put your family first; you have to be perfect, obedient, virtuous, smile, do not cause problems - this is a very small list of stereotypes that you wear like jewelry.

The cultural script, which has been written for women for centuries and does not seem to end, is full of contradictions - the result is mental health problems, emotional exhaustion and physical exhaustion.

The strange thing is that many women, willingly or unwillingly, try to fit into these frames and suffer from good girl syndrome. It is one thing to have these characteristics naturally, and another to try to fit into the "standards".

Psychologists explain that this term (meaning good girl syndrome) is not a diagnosed mental health condition and is actually a set of habits that really harm women.

Psychologists say that the roots of this syndrome are in society - a stereotype has been formed about what a woman should be like and what role she can play. Many women even feel guilty if they deviate from the good girl syndrome.

The following habits are characteristic of good girl syndrome:

  • Perfectionism - striving for perfection;
  • The main thing is to please those around you;
  • You put others before yourself;
  • Low self-esteem, you are constantly dissatisfied with your appearance and try to change it;
  • Various types of problems in your sexual life;
  • Childhood trauma that has a serious impact on your real personality, feelings, ambitions, goals and desires.
