Functional dyspepsia is a type of chronic digestive disorder.
Patients with this diagnosis often complain of stomach pain, a feeling of fullness or bloating after eating.
Your doctor will diagnose functional dyspepsia after confirming your symptoms and ruling out other causes. Keep in mind that symptoms of functional dyspepsia may occur from time to time.
The diagnosis is made only if:
• Symptoms have been present for more than 3 months;
• They have been present for at least 6 months;
• The discomfort is not relieved by bowel movements, gas or belching;
• The pain does not meet the criteria for gallstones or gallbladder pain.
When dyspepsia is confirmed, the following tests are ordered to rule out a structural cause:
• Blood tests;
• Breath tests;
• Checks how quickly or slowly the stomach empties;
• Endoscopic examination of the digestive system.
When bacterial overgrowth or motility disorders are confirmed, these problems are first treated. However, treating this pathological process alone is not enough to relieve functional dyspepsia.
Complementary medicine may be effective, including:
• Herbal formulas;
• Relaxation therapy for the body and mind;
• An elimination diet to identify foods that cause discomfort;
• Acupuncture - a type of needle-prick therapy.
