Abdominal muscle strain

Abdominal muscle strain

What causes an abdominal muscle strain?

The abdominal muscle is part of the musculoskeletal system and is located in the front of the body, between the ribs and the pelvis.

An abdominal muscle strain is an overuse injury. It is caused by a strain or tear in the abdominal muscles.

Anyone can develop it, but it is especially common in football and tennis players.

Muscle strains heal with rest - the condition improves over time.

Other causes include:

  • A fall or accident;
  • Chronic coughing or sneezing;
  • Intense exercise;
  • Lifting a heavy object;
  • Being in poor form during a sports activity or workout;
  • Sudden twisting of the body.

The main symptoms of a muscle strain are abdominal and musculoskeletal pain.

Pain may occur in the following situations:

  • When coughing, sneezing, or laughing;
  • After prolonged inactivity and standing up;
  • During high-intensity physical activity.
  • Typical symptoms include:
  • Bruising;
  • Muscle spasm, pain, or stiffness;
  • Swelling.
