Troponin test - a protein that is released into the blood during a heart attack

What is troponin?

This type of test looks for a protein called troponin in the bloodstream.

Normally, troponin is located in the heart muscle cells and is released into the blood only when a person's heart muscle is damaged. Therefore, a troponin test is used to diagnose a heart attack or other heart-related problems. The higher the level of this protein in the blood, the more damage to the heart - the study shows the severity of the heart attack.

Troponin levels may be elevated due to other conditions, including:

  • Chronic kidney disease;
  • Pulmonary embolism;
  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Heart surgery;
  • Heart valve disease;
  • Arrhythmia;
  • Sepsis;
  • Excessive physical exertion or intense exercise;
  • Acute emotional stress.
