Tonsil swelling

Tonsil swelling

What you need to know about the causes?

In a large percentage of clinical cases, tonsil swelling is caused by viral and bacterial infections. Some infections heal on their own, that is, they do not require specific medical intervention, however, in the case of an acute bacterial course, antibiotic therapy becomes necessary.

The main causes are:

• Acute tonsillitis;
• Streptococcal pharyngitis;
• Adenovirus;
• Epstein-Barr virus;
• Influenza;
• Measles.

Immediately consult a doctor if you have the following symptoms:

• Difficulty speaking and swallowing;
• Difficulty breathing;
• The patient has difficulty opening his mouth;
• The sore throat is getting worse.

The tonsils are soft tissue masses on the back of the throat; they often have to deal with germs that enter the mouth - their main job is to filter out pathogens. When the number of germs is higher than normal, the risk of tonsil infection is high.

Tonsillitis cannot always be prevented, but to reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended to:

• Maintain good personal hygiene;
• Avoid close contact with people who have colds;
• Quit smoking;
• Wash your hands regularly;
• Follow all your doctor's instructions regarding vaccinations.
