What is virilization?

Virilization is a condition where a woman develops male characteristics or when a newborn baby has signs of male hormones in the body at birth.

The cause of virilization is the production of excess androgens by the adrenal gland or the intake of anabolic steroids. Treatment includes surgery and steroids.

Symptoms of virilization may appear in a woman at any age.

Signs of virilization in adult women are:

• Breasts become smaller;
• The uterus contracts;
• The clitoris enlarges;
• Irregular cycle.

Virilization is less visible in males. If symptoms are not present at birth, it is expected that signs will become noticeable at the age of transition. Men who have excess androgen in their body have a turning point age, the period of puberty begins much earlier than their peers.

Symptoms of virilization vary from person to person, but the main signs are:

• Excessive hair on the body and face;
• Acne or oily skin;
• Irregular cycle;
• Male pattern baldness;
• Small breasts;
• Enlarged clitoris;
• Muting the voice;
• Increased libido.

The main reason for the formation of virilization is the overproduction of the male hormone androgen.

The following diseases may be the cause of the production of large amounts of androgens:

• Polycystic ovary syndrome;
• Cushing's syndrome;
• Adrenal gland tumor;
• Ovarian tumor and others.
