What is agnosia?
Agnosia is a condition in which a person loses the ability to remember well-known objects, faces, sounds, places. Despite the loss of sensation, the patient still has the ability to think, speak, communicate with others.
Different types of agnosia are known to scientists and each one manifests itself with corresponding symptoms; For example, during visual agnosia, the patient cannot remember the name and purpose of the object placed in front of him. In case of diagnosis of prosopagnosia, the patient can no longer recognize or remember familiar faces. In case of achromatopsia, it is difficult to identify colors.
Agnosia is formed as a result of damage to the nervous system and brain. Basically, the sensory area is affected.
Agnosia can develop in the background of injuries caused by stroke, head trauma or encephalitis.
In some clinical cases, the underlying causes are:
- Dementia;
- Brain tumor;
- Carbon monoxide poisoning.
