When the digestive system is no longer supplied with the necessary amount of oxygen and blood flow

What is mesenteric ischemia?

Mesenteric ischemia is a rare but serious medical condition. This diagnosis occurs when a part of the digestive system no longer receives enough blood flow and oxygen. The cause may be suffocation or a blood circulation problem.

Mesenteric ischemia is more common in the elderly and especially if there is a history of blood coagulation disorders or cardiovascular diseases.

There are two types of mesenteric ischemia: acute and chronic.

Risk factors are:

  • Atrial fibrillation;
  • Coronary artery disease;
  • Diabetes;
  • Heart failure;
  • High blood pressure;
  • High cholesterol;
  • Violation of hypercoagulation;
  • Postponed operation;
  • Peripheral vascular disease;
  • Tobacco consumption.

Symptoms depend on which form of mesenteric ischemia the patient has.

Basically, the following symptoms appear:

  • Abdominal pain;
  • Bloating;
  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Diarrhea;
  • The patient notices a change in the functioning of the stomach;
  • Fever;
  • Weight loss.
