Hair standing on the scalp - piloerection, goosebumps

Hair standing on the scalp - piloerection, goosebumps

What is a piloerection?

Goosebumps are formed when muscle contractions cause the hair to stand on the scalp. Goosebumps can be noticed on the arms and legs. In the part of the body where the hair is light-colored or relatively small, the hair follicle is located on the forehead, you will notice its swelling.

In medical language, this condition is called piloerection.

Contributing factors are:

  • Cold;
  • Strong emotion;
  • Some medications.
  • The primary symptom of goosebumps is an uneven skin surface.

Other symptoms include:

  • Hair standing on the forehead;
  • The skin suddenly becomes more hairy;
  • Feeling cold;
  • Trembling;
  • Strong emotion.

It is quite expected that a person will panic or feel restless during a piloerection. Some people develop anxiety and fear that others will not notice and judge this symptom.

Piloerection is not a disease, therefore, it does not require treatment, it is impossible to prevent it, however, taking into account certain recommendations, the risk will be reduced to a minimum.

I recommend:

  • If it's cold outside, dress warmly;
  • Avoid strong air conditioning;
  • Try to maintain maximum calmness in a stressful situation;
  • Moisturize your skin regularly.
