Why does acne appear and how is it treated?

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands of the skin.

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.

Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. It is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.

Effective treatments are available, but acne can be persistent. The pimples and bumps heal slowly, and when one begins to go away, others seem to crop up.

Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin. Remember that the course of treatment takes time, and you should not feel awkward.

Symptoms:

Acne signs and symptoms vary depending on the severity of your condition:

  • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
  • Small red, tender bumps (papules)
  • Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips
  • Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules)

Avoid mechanical irritation (no watering) when any type of rash appears on the face, as the condition can be very complicated. Keep in mind that the veins in the facial area have no valves and therefore the risk of spreading the infection to the brain is quite high.

Most patients treat acne arbitrarily, but the sooner you see a dermatologist, the sooner the problem will go away.

Causes

Dermatologists focus on 4 main factors that causes acne: Excess oil production; Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells; Bacteria; Excess activity of a type of hormone (androgens)

Due to some risk factors, acne appears or the degree of acne worsens, for example: Hormone disbalance, certain medications, diet (milk, carbohydrates, chocolate are common causes of worsening symptoms), stress.

Treatment

The treatment regimen your doctor recommends depends on your age, the type and severity of your acne.

Lotions, gels or creams, antibiotic therapy, antibacterial medications, laser treatment, chemical peels, colorectal extraction, steroid injections, and more may be prescribed.
