When to consult a doctor?
Encephalopathy describes any disease that damages the brain and impairs its functioning, causing mental changes.
Call 911 or take the patient to the emergency department of the clinic with the following symptoms:
- Severe, severe confusion or disorientation;
- Uncontrollable, uncontrolled attacks;
- Loss of consciousness;
- Thinking about hurting yourself.
If you notice that a person shows signs of encephalopathy (memory loss, decreased ability to concentrate, drowsiness, relaxation, aggression, impulsive behavior, irritability), you should consult a doctor. Special attention is paid to persons with various types of diseases already diagnosed.
Methods of diagnosis and treatment
To diagnose and determine the type of encephalopathy, the following studies are provided:
- Blood analysis;
- Evaluation of complaint, symptoms, anamnesis;
- Cerebrospinal fluid sampling;
- Brain scan (computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging);
- Electroencephalography;
- Mental state and ability testing.
Management of acute encephalopathy (treatment symptomatically, antibiotics or nutritional supplements) is essential in the clinic.
In more severe clinical cases, when encephalopathy is formed by liver or kidney problems, dialysis or organ transplantation becomes necessary.
