Dermatomyositis is a rare inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness and a specific rash.
The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but dermatomyositis has a lot in common with autoimmune diseases, a process in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's healthy tissues.
Genetics and environmental factors play a certain role in the development of the disease.
Risk factors are:
- Viral infection;
- The influence of the sun on the skin;
- Tobacco consumption;
- Some medications (some kind of side effect).
For diagnosing it is recommended to do:
- Complete blood count;
- Chest x-ray;
- Electromyography;
- Skin or muscle biopsy
Dermatomyositis cannot be cures, but several methods can improve skin structure, skin function and density;
For treatment it may be prescribed:
- Medications;
- Physiotherapy;
- Surgery.
If skin rash is sensitive to sunlight in case of dermatomyositis, it is recommended to use sunscreen and should be dressed the way to protect the affected area.
