What causes smelling discharge?

You may notice foul-smelling or other unusual types of discharge from any area of the body (vagina, penis, wound, armpit, etc.). Usually, this symptom is an indication of an infection or other health problem.

"Discharge" can be defined as any liquid that is released from the body. Many types of discharge are healthy, that is, they are part of the normal functioning of the body.

The cause of discharge with a specific smell may be:

  • Sexually transmitted infections;
  • Fungal infection;
  • Bacterial vaginosis;
  • Foreign body in the vagina;
  • Anal fistula;
  • Trimethylamine.

Recommendation

Smelly or other unusual type of discharge, from any area of the body, is noteworthy and requires the supervision of a doctor, adequate diagnosis. In a large percentage of clinical cases, the cause of this type of discharge is infection.

If a sexually transmitted infection is diagnosed, the patient's sexual partner should also be treated.

The course of treatment depends on the cause of discharge. Appropriate drug therapy is used to treat the infection, for example, you may need antibiotics, antifungal or antiviral medication (depending on the underlying cause).
