What is emetophobia?
A person suffering from emetophobia is afraid of vomiting, is afraid of the fact of getting sick, and has an unpleasant feeling if he sees someone else vomiting.
This phobia has a negative impact on the rhythm of a person's daily life, for example, due to emetophobia, a person does not dine in a restaurant, avoids public gatherings, rarely travels, does not try new dishes, hysterically monitors his health.
Emetophobia can be managed with psychotherapy.
The following type of behavior is characteristic of this phobia:
- You avoid the food or place that you associate with vomiting;
- You don't try new food, drink;
- You only eat at home;
- You smell the food and check the products thoroughly;
- You avoid the hospital as much as possible because you don't want to see a sick patient vomiting;
- You are taking preventive medicines for nausea or stomach upset;
- Your view of health monitoring is exaggerated, for example, you measure temperature for no reason at all;
- You wash your hands and dishes more often than necessary;
- Do not drink the medicine if you read in its annotation that a possible side effect of the medicine is nausea;
- You avoid traveling, school, parties, public transport and any place where there are people due to a pathological fear of vomiting;
- Even the word vomit evokes inexplicable fear;
- As much as possible, you avoid the space where there may be a nausea-inducing smell;
- If you think about vomiting, you complain of shortness of breath, tingling in the heart area, your heart beats faster.
