How to recognize neuroticism?

What is neuroticism?

Neuroticism is one of the Big 5 personality traits, typically defined as a tendency toward anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or other negative feelings.

People prone to this condition often suffer from anxiety, mood disorders, do not enjoy social relationships, and have difficulty expressing their emotions.

The level of diagnosis is established on the basis of the appropriate test.

The patient should answer the following:

  • Does he often feel bad, out of character;
  • How easily irritated;
  • How often the mood changes;
  • Is it easy to disturb him or not;
  • What is he nervous about, what issue worries him, etc.

According to some scientists, the level of neuroticism decreases when a young person enters adulthood. Life events such as a first romantic relationship, starting a job, moving to college, etc. reduce symptoms.

Personality is, of course, a factor to consider, but identifying the cause of nervousness or a tendency to distress can, therefore, improve the condition.

Psychotherapy is an effective method of managing the condition.
