What is the Heimlich maneuver?

The Heimlich maneuver is a first aid method that is recommended when a person is choking.

Note that this method is only allowed when a person has difficulty breathing independently due to the ingestion/swallowing of food, a toy, or any other foreign body.

The Heimlich maneuver is performed in the following way, the instructions are as follows:

• Stand behind the person and wrap your hands around their stomach;
• Place your thumb under the rib cage and 5 centimeters above the navel;
• Quickly and strongly, push from the bottom up (five times);
• Continue this action until the patient is able to breathe independently and the foreign body is removed from the airway.
