(hematospermia) can be frightening, but the cause of this uncommon condition is usually benign. Typically, blood in semen goes away on its own.
Often the exact cause is unknown.
In some clinical cases, in men under the age of 40, infection is a contributing risk factor (along with blood in the semen, the patient also complains of other symptoms).
If you often notice blood in the semen or it has an acute course, you are 40 years old or over 40 years old, consult a doctor immediately, because this symptom is quite possible to indicate a serious condition.
Possible causes are:
- Brachytherapy;
- Chlamydia;
- Testicular inflammation;
- Excessive sexual activity or masturbation;
- Genital herpes;
- Gonorrhea;
- Hemophilia;
- Prostate biopsy;
- Prostate cancer;
- Trauma in the testicle area;
- Vasectomy;
- Prostatitis.
Rare causes include:
- Amyloidosis;
- Benign growths;
- Schistosomiasis;
- Tuberculosis and others.
If you are a man under the age of 40 and you notice blood in your semen, the symptom will most likely go away without treatment. However, to be safe, consult a doctor and do research (for example, the cause could be a sexually transmitted infection).
Consult your doctor if you notice blood in your semen and also:
- You are 40 years old or over 40 years old;
- You have blood in your semen for more than 3 or 4 weeks;
- Blood appears regularly in semen;
- Pain during urination;
- History of cancer, bleeding disorders, genital or urinary system malformation.
