Prevention methods.
Iron deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia — a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells.
Causes of iron deficiency anemia include:
- A lack of iron in your diet.
- Blood loss.
- An inability to absorb iron.
The risk of iron-deficiency anemia will decrease if you take iron-rich foods. Keep in mind, the body absorbs a large amount of iron from meat, and if you do not eat meat, you should include (much more) other iron-containing foods in your diet. It is advisable to take food and drinks containing vitamin C, because vitamin C helps the body absorb dietary iron much better.
Choose iron-rich foods, foods rich in iron include:
- Red meat
- Seafood
- Beans
- Peas
- Iron-fortified cereals, breads and pastas
- Brocolli
- Grapefruit
- Kiwi
- Melon
- Citrus
- Tomato
- Strawberry
