Aerophagia - excessive swallowing of air while talking, eating or laughing

What is aerophagia?

Aerophagia means swallowing an excessive amount of air.

When we talk, eat or laugh, we all swallow air, but people diagnosed with aerophagia swallow so much that the accumulated air in their body causes gastrointestinal symptoms (bloating, bloating, flatulence, abdominal distension).

Aerophagia can be chronic or acute, related to both physical and psychological factors.

Excess air enters the body in the following ways:

  •  Fast feeding;
  •  Talking while eating;
  •  Chewing gum;
  •  Intake of liquid with sticks intended for juice (so-called sippers);
  •  Tobacco;
  •  Mouth breathing;
  •  High intensity exercise and more.
