Heartburn is a burning sensation, pain in the chest area (behind the breast bone).
In a large percentage of clinical cases, the pain is exacerbated after ingesting food or when you are leaning or squatting.
The cause of unpleasant discomfort is irritation of the esophagus with stomach acid content.
Lifestyle and home remedies
Lifestyle changes can help ease heartburn:
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Avoid tightfitting clothing.
- Avoid foods that trigger your heartburn. (For example, spicy dishes, onions, citrus, tomato sauce or other products made with tomatoes, fatty or fried foods, chocolate, mint);
- Avoid drinks that aggravate heartburn symptoms (for example, alcohol, sweet and carbonated drinks, any beverage containing coffee and caffeine);
- Avoid lying down after a meal. Wait at least three hours.
- Avoid late meals.
- Elevate the head of your bed if you regularly experience heartburn at night or while trying to sleep.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol.
- Avoid large meals. Instead eat many small meals throughout the day.
