Fluid in the knee - a few methods that will alleviate the condition

Accumulation of excess fluid in or around the knee joint is called swelling in the knee area.

This condition is known by various names, such as effusion of the knee joint, fluid in the knee, water in the knee, and more.

The cause of edema may be trauma, injury caused by excessive physical exertion, covert disease, and more.

Diagnosis and treatment

A fluid analysis examination is provided to diagnose the cause of swelling in the knee area. In addition, your doctor may order tests such as x-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Treatment varies, depending on the cause of the swollen knee, its severity and your medical history. Treatment generally involves pain medication and procedures to remove fluid from the knee joint. A course of physiotherapy is recommended to improve knee function.

Lifestyle and home remedies

Taking care of yourself when you have a swollen knee includes:

  •  Rest. Avoid weight-bearing activities as much as possible.
  •  Ice and elevation. To control pain and swelling, apply ice to your knee for 15 to 20 minutes every two to four hours. When you ice your knee, raise your knee higher than the level of your heart, using pillows for comfort.
  •  Crystals common to gout or pseudogout
