When is a nerve biopsy performed?
A biopsy is a procedure in which a small piece of tissue is removed and examined in a laboratory. The purpose of the analysis is to diagnose pathologies and obtain important information about the disease.
During a nerve biopsy, a part of the nerve (approximately 2 centimeters long) is removed, usually a sensory nerve. During a nerve biopsy, it is possible to diagnose pathologies associated with nerve damage and rare conditions associated with brain disorders.
This procedure can confirm the following diseases:
- Diseases that cause inflammation of the blood vessels;
- Which part of the nerve is damaged;
- Myelin separation;
- Pathological cells or inflammatory process.
Before a nerve biopsy, the doctor will prescribe a blood test, electrical studies, and a lumbar puncture. In some clinical cases, a biopsy of the skin or other body tissue is also effective.
