Bruises are a part of life.
Some are small, while others are large and painful. Bruises occur when tiny blood vessels under the skin are damaged and blood leaks out; the skin is not broken, so blood collects under the skin.
Bruises can occur for the following reasons:
- Falling;
- Surgery, medical procedure;
- Sports injury;
- Sprained joint;
- Hitting your limb with something, such as a door, etc.
The time it takes for a bruise to disappear and a bruise to heal varies from person to person, depending on what caused the bruise and how extensive it is. On average, it heals within 3 weeks. As the bruise heals, you may notice that it changes color.
In some clinical cases, bruising is a sign of a health problem and requires medical intervention. See your doctor if you notice the following:
- You bruise frequently and cannot explain it;
- The bruise is large;
- The bruise is small and about the size of a pin;
- The bruise does not spread, but it does not hurt either;
- You bruise easily.
