Trimethylaminuria - When a person smells rotten fish

What is trimethylaminuria?

Trimethylaminuria is a condition in which a person smells rotten fish. It is a metabolic disorder. The method of curing this diagnosis is unknown, but the patient's condition is expected to improve against the background of dietary changes, stress management techniques and drug therapy.

Doctors distinguish two main forms:

  • Primary trimethylaminuria - the cause is a genetic mutation that the patient inherits from his biological parents;
  • Secondary trimethylaminuria - certain diseases and nutritional supplements contribute to the formation of fish odor syndrome.

Trimethylaminuria occurs when an enzyme called FMO3 is damaged as a result of some type of exposure.

Trimethylaminuria significantly reduces the quality of life - due to fish odor syndrome, a person has difficulty socializing, organizing his personal life, working at work.

This diagnosis significantly increases the risk of psychological problems such as:

  • Anxiety;
  • Depression;
  • Paranoia.
