Jaw Pain

What Causes Jaw Pain?

Jaw pain is a common complaint that affects millions of people. It can be mild or severe enough to significantly impair a person’s quality of life.

  • Jaw pain can be caused by:
  • Aching in the temporomandibular joint;
  • A throbbing/pulsating pain in the jaw;
  • Intense jaw pain after an injury;
  • Pain that radiates from the chest or shoulder to the jaw.

Sometimes jaw pain resolves without specific treatment. However, you should definitely see a doctor if your symptoms last more than a week.

In some clinical cases, jaw pain is an emergency and you should call an ambulance if you experience the following symptoms:

  • You think you have broken or dislocated your jaw;
  • Pain radiates from your chest to your jaw.

Most often, jaw pain is caused by a temporomandibular joint disorder.

Other possible causes include:

  • Tooth abscess;
  • Arthritis;
  • Teeth grinding;
  • Gum disease;
  • Bacterial infection;
  • Trauma;
  • Mumps;
  • Jaw or gum fracture.
