Macroglossia - Giant Tongue

Macroglossia - Giant Tongue

What is macroglossia?

Macroglossia is a giant tongue, an enlargement of the tongue. It is a rare condition - it is more common in children than in adults.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, most people are born with macroglossia - in congenital cases, the cause is various types of diseases. If macroglossia is acquired, the cause is some form of cancer or an acute infection.

In macroglossia, the tongue is so large that it protrudes from the oral cavity. The patient may have problems eating, breathing, or speaking.

As a rule, macroglossia is associated with hereditary conditions, therefore, prevention is impossible. In other clinical cases (meaning acquired), it is recommended to protect yourself from infectious diseases as much as possible.

The exact statistics of the incidence of macroglossia are unknown, since this symptom is a sign of many other diseases, and in addition, not all patients with this condition in their anamnesis increase in tongue size.
