Sarcopenic Obesity - Loss of Muscle Mass and Excess Adipose Tissue

What is sarcopenic obesity?

Sarcopenic obesity is a combination of high body fat and decreased muscle mass. Muscle mass loss is usually age-related.

Treatment involves lifestyle and dietary changes.

Risk factors for sarcopenia include:

• Inflammation;
• Insulin resistance;
• Oxidative stress;
• Inactive lifestyle.

The severity of sarcopenic obesity is diagnosed using a 2-stage system, namely:

• In the first stage, the person has changed body proportions, but no complications have been identified;
• In the second stage, the patient has health problems.

Sarcopenia significantly reduces the quality of life and causes the following types of complications:

• Bone fractures;
• Muscle pain and weakness;
• Joint pain;
• Difficulty living independently;
• High risk of complications after surgery;
• High likelihood of falling.
