What is paracentesis?
Paracentesis is a procedure in which a surgeon removes excess/excess fluid (medically known as ascites) from the abdominal cavity using a catheter.
With ascites, the patient complains of pain and pressure, therefore, this manipulation significantly improves the condition. Paracentesis is not performed only to eliminate the symptom, for example, it is sometimes prescribed as a diagnostic method and helps the doctor determine the cause of fluid accumulation.
Paracentesis is both a treatment method and a diagnostic procedure.
The following conditions can be diagnosed with paracentesis:
- Liver cirrhosis;
- Portal hypertension;
- Infection;
- Cancer;
- Organ failure.
Therapeutic paracentesis is used to manage the following symptoms (caused by fluid accumulation):
- Abdominal pain and pressure;
- Abdominal distension;
- Shortness of breath;
- Bloating;
- Digestive system disorders;
- Constipation.
