Needle phobia

What is trypanophobia?

Trypanophobia is a severe fear of needles. This phobia is so severe that a person avoids consulting a doctor as much as possible, is afraid of vaccinations, blood transfusions and any other medical manipulations that require needles.

The following risk factors contribute to the development of trypanophobia:

  • A negative, traumatic event associated with needles;
  • A family history of needle phobia;
  • A history of other phobias related to illness or medicine;
  • Anxiety disorders.

Typical symptoms are:

  • Dizziness or fainting;
  • Rapid heartbeat;
  • Insomnia;
  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure;
  • Increased sensitivity to pain;
  • Seeing a needle brings back memories of negative or traumatic situations.
